How to Start Learning Your Tennis Serve

Begin at the Service Line

To begin learning your tennis serve, start at the service line. This initial position is called "level zero" because it allows you to appropriately feel every element of the serve without adding extra effort, such as trying to force the ball over the net. At this stage, you don't need to concern yourself with anything beyond this foundational setup. Standing at the service line removes all other things that don't matter as you develop your serve. To apply this, get a basket of balls and position yourself directly at the service line.
